# Document Categories

# Document Categories

Categories help you organise documents within a project. Instead of a flat list of files, you can group them by purpose.

## Default categories

When your firm is set up in Arkata, a default set of categories is created. These can be customised to match how your firm organises files.

## Assigning a category

When uploading a document (or editing an existing one), you can assign it to a category from the dropdown. This is optional — documents without a category still appear in the full list.

## Managing categories

Your firm can create, rename, and delete custom categories:

1. Go to **Settings** or the project's document settings
2. Manage the available categories
3. New categories become available immediately for all projects

<Warning>
  Deleting a category doesn't delete documents in it — they simply become uncategorised.
</Warning>

## Tips for using categories well

* Keep the list short and meaningful (e.g. "Drawings", "Submissions", "Correspondence", "Photos")
* Use consistent naming across projects so team members always know where to file things
* Don't over-categorise — 5-8 categories is usually enough
