# Creating a Project

A project is the central record in Arkata. It represents a single permit application, regulatory submission, or professional engagement for a client.

## How to create a project

1. Go to **Projects** in the sidebar
2. Click **New Project**
3. Select the **client** this project belongs to (the client must already exist)
4. Choose the **project type** (PA, RG, DNO, etc. — see [Project Types](/projects/project-types))
5. Fill in the project name and any other details
6. Click **Save**

## What happens when you create a project

* Arkata generates an **Internal Reference** automatically (e.g. `INT-0042`). This is the project's unique identifier throughout the system.
* If the project type has a lifecycle, the lifecycle phases are set up automatically.
* The project starts with no documents, tasks, or billing stages — you add those as work progresses.

## Required fields

* **Client**: Every project must belong to a client
* **Project type**: Determines the lifecycle phases available
* **Name**: A descriptive name for the project

## Optional fields

* **PA Reference**: The Planning Authority reference number (e.g. `PA/00123/24`). You can add this later once the PA assigns one.
* **Locality**: Where the project is located
* **Description**: Additional notes about the project
