Document Categories
Categories help you organise documents within a project. Instead of a flat list of files, you can group them by purpose.
Default categories
When your firm is set up in Arkata, a default set of categories is created. These can be customised to match how your firm organises files.
Assigning a category
When uploading a document (or editing an existing one), you can assign it to a category from the dropdown. This is optional — documents without a category still appear in the full list.
Managing categories
Your firm can create, rename, and delete custom categories:
- Go to Settings or the project’s document settings
- Manage the available categories
- New categories become available immediately for all projects
Deleting a category doesn’t delete documents in it — they simply become uncategorised.
Tips for using categories well
- Keep the list short and meaningful (e.g. “Drawings”, “Submissions”, “Correspondence”, “Photos”)
- Use consistent naming across projects so team members always know where to file things
- Don’t over-categorise — 5-8 categories is usually enough
